THE FOUNDING (1906 – 1938)
A FOUNDATION OF PRECISION
In 1906, Windhoek was a vastly different place. In an era of pioneering development, Wilhelm Meyer recognised a growing need for precision optics in Namibia. He established W. Meyer Optometrists, originally combining a jewellery house with a specialised optics sideline.
From those early days on Independence Avenue, the name Meyer became synonymous with meticulous craftsmanship and quality imports. We did not merely sell spectacles; we introduced a standard of visual measurements that Namibian families came to trust for their daily lives.
THE HÜBNER LEGACY & SPECIALISED EVOLUTION (1939 – 1985)
CONTINUITY AND SCIENTIFIC ADVANCEMENT
In 1939, the practice was acquired by A.G.J. Hübner, starting a multi-generational commitment to elevating local optometry. Under the Hübner family's stewardship, the business adapted to rapid developments in medical science.
The turning point came in 1986. Second-generation optometrist K.W.F. Hübner made the strategic decision to transition the legacy business away from general retail to specialise exclusively in high-end, professional optometry. Backed by computerised clinical equipment and a highly trained staff, W. Meyer Optometrists became Namibia's leading medicalised eye care centre.

Today, our historic practice at 138 Jan Jonker Street is led by partners Roy R. Hermanus and Arne Schmid, alongside our dedicated clinical team, including Nadia Vermaak.
Our reputation is built on clinical capabilities that cannot be matched. We are proud to be the sole agency in Southern Africa for the specialised Chromagen System, offering targeted, life-changing therapeutic lenses for colour vision deficiencies and visual reading stress. Alongside Colorimetry and advanced diagnostic screening, we manage complex cases, contact lens designs, prosthetic artificial eyes, and preliminary screenings for LASIK eye surgery.
But medical precision is only half of our legacy. Our Windhoek showroom features a hand-curated portfolio of over 6,000 designer frames from the world's most prestigious eyewear fashion houses, offering an individualised, boutique styling experience that celebrates your unique identity.
